Why is it not a circle?
We believe an octagon strikes the perfect balance of form, function, and ease of set up. When all players are on the same boundaries, the consistency removes any perceived problems with it not being a circle.
While it may seem like a big difference to have more distance from the net to each vertex than middle of the straight edges, in practice this hardly effects rallies. Everyone is on the same court with the same boundaries and aiming for the line is not as viable a strategy as in volleyball or racquet sports.
Overall, once you give it a try you will very quickly see that a clear, vibrant line is significantly better than an invisible line between cones.
Not convinced? Think about it this way. If you practice with our boundary lines set to 8.5 m, the shortest possible distance will be 65 cm closer. This means when you go to a tournament will a fully painted 8.5 m circle, your shots will be tuned to never go out.
